WP 1 - Energy planning models and methodologies

To compare the energy systems and energy planning models used, reviewing models and methodologies and testing its use in in both European and Brazilian markets.

The WP will address the overall framework of sustainability, therefore taking into account the economic, environmental and social dimensions. Knowledge sharing from existing projects and from previous research experience is envisaged.

WP Coordinator: University of Minho (Portugal)

WP 2 - Risk and uncertainty in energy planning

To plan the inclusion of risk and uncertainty in energy project evaluation and in energy planning models, recognizing climate impact as an important risk factor to be taken into account on future energy decisions.

Recognizing the uncertainty of long term energy decisions frequently driven by external factors, WP 2 aims to select relevant factors and variables analysing how the energy scenarios and project evaluation may be affected by changes on pre-defined assumptions. Aspects such climate change, political risk, financial risks, demand projections and social acceptance will be addressed and included in the planning models and methodologies.

WP Coordinator: Fundação Coordenação de Projetos Pesquisas e Estudos Tecnológicos (Brazil)

WP 3 - Energy sustainability in manufacturing industry

To adopt the energy planning models and the risk and uncertainty in the context of the design of sustainable manufacturing operations and to devise a novel sustainable manufacturing systems design process based on the concept of production ecosystem.

The question of energy efficiency and sustainable manufacturing will be addressed under WP3, analysing the impact of energy conservation measures to the overall performance of the manufacturing operations. This WP aims to integrate sustainable manufacturing and energy planning knowledge as key elements of a sustainable energy system.

WP Coordinator: Cranfield University (United Kingdom)

WP 4 - Checking the feasibility, viability and desirability of energy scenarios

To address the social dimension of the energy decisions and the required integration of the perspective of different social actors in the definition of sustainability and energy planning.

The WP will address the epistemological challenge of how to generate representations of energy scenarios across different dimensions of analysis: (i) feasibility deals with the compatibility of the pattern of activities expressed by a socio-economic system with boundary conditions - external constraints; (ii) viability deals with the compatibility of the pattern of activities expressed by a socio-economic system with its internal structural organization (technical and economic viability) - internal constraints; and (iii) desirability deals with the existence of normative aspects and cultural values determining the level of acceptance of possible scenarios to the society. The WP leaders will share and illustrate the theoretical principles and practical aspects of the MuSIASEM methodology developed in UAB, generating multicriterial evaluations of robust scenarios and characterizing multi-scale energy scenarios for different countries.

WP Coordinator: Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona

WP 5 - Management of partnership

To ensure the efficient management of the partnership in order to attain the objectives of the program, coordinating scope, time, cost and human resources so that all the tasks will be done on time, the milestones reached and the deliverables delivered.
